California Legislature Passes Historic Climate Bill Targeting Carbon Neutrality by 2035
Lawmakers in Sacramento approved sweeping legislation that would accelerate the state's transition away from fossil fuels, with far-reaching implications for businesses and consumers alike.
Sacramento — In a landmark vote that drew both praise and protest from the Capitol steps, the California State Legislature on Thursday passed a sweeping climate bill that sets an ambitious target of full carbon neutrality by 2035 — five years ahead of the previous deadline.
Governor Gavin Newsom is expected to sign the bill into law next week. The legislation, known as AB 1200, mandates a 60% reduction in industrial emissions by 2028 and provides $8 billion in subsidies for clean-energy transition support.
Critics, including the California Chamber of Commerce, warned that the timeline was 'economically reckless,' while environmental advocates called it 'the most important climate law in California history.'
