New Study Links California's Wildfire Smoke to Long-Term Cognitive Decline
Researchers from UC Berkeley have published findings showing that prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke is associated with significantly elevated rates of dementia and cognitive impairment in older Californians.
Berkeley — A new study from UC Berkeley's School of Public Health has found strong evidence linking long-term exposure to wildfire smoke with a measurably elevated risk of dementia and cognitive decline in adults over 55, adding another dimension to the already well-documented health impacts of the state's increasingly severe fire seasons.
The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, tracked the health outcomes of nearly 80,000 Californians over 12 years and controlled for a broad range of demographic and health variables.
